Remaining Native wins the Special Jury and Audience Award in Austin.

Remaining Native has received the Special Jury Award and Audience Award in the feature documentary competition category at South by Southwest!

With three packed screenings, on March 7th, 8th, and 11th, Remaining Native had an impactful launch into the world.

Thanks to Nike Running, the Austin Powwow Committee, Mañana Coffee, and many others, the film team also brought together over 200 runners for a 5K community run to celebrate the film and help spread it’s message.

In addition, Kutoven Stevens joined Running Strong for American Indian Youth spokesperson and Olympic legend Billy Mills for an engaging event at TLC. Mr. Mills signed copies of his newly published children's book Wings of An Eagle, and attendees received Remaining Native movie posters, signed by Ku.

The team also participated in a panel with Indigenous Cinema Has No Borders. This panel, moderated by Adam Piron, brought together four Indigenous filmmakers, Kayla Briët, Shane McSauby, Loren Waters, and Paige Bethmann who were all premiering their latest work at SXSW.

“Remaining Native” is a coming-of-age documentary told from the perspective of Ku Stevens, a 17-year-old Native American runner. Ku struggles to navigate his dream of becoming a collegiate athlete as the memory of his great grandfather's escape from an Indian boarding school begins to connect past, present, and future.

Ku runs not only to honor his great grandfather but because he has the right to run. Through his legs he hopes to carry on this legacy and find success in his determination and ability as a runner.
