XARAKHAM
(THE NEW LAND)

The Khwe Bushmen of northern Botswana have lived nomadically in the African bush for 100,000 years or more. They are the original people.

Like most Indigenous Peoples, they are increasingly marginalized and forced into villages along with other trips, depriving them of their traditional hunting and gathering lifestyle. But Hennie, a community leader, has a different vision. He leads a small group on a quest to find a new land, where they can re-establish land rights and resume their traditional lifestyle.

Eight courageous members of his small village join him on the long journey to visit and evaluate this new land in extreme northwest Botswana. The Elder Mathias provides counsel and perspective, teaching the young about this Khwe traditions. Along the way they meet Kahoro, whom they call simply “the old man.”

Nearing his final years, he grew up on the promised land and teaches them the ways of the bush. The young generation, Nikolas and Magur, soak up the experience and dream of a new life with a new hope based on tradition. They find greater challenges than expected in the New Land, and The Old Man’s prophesy quickly comes true.
